How to: Configure auto-indent to use tabs instead of spaces
The information in this document applies to:
 Summary

By default HTML-Kit uses spaces instead of tabs when auto-indenting. This document explains how to configure it to use tabs for auto indents and block indents.

 Details
  • Select "Edit | Preferences" from the main menu.

  • Change to the "Editor" tab.

  • Check "Use tab character" and "Optimal fill" options.

  • Make sure that the "Show hidden characters" option is checked (default setting).

  • Click "OK"

HTML-Kit will now use the most optimal combination of tabs and space characters when auto-indenting.

Since the default visible size of a tab is two space characters, at first glance it may appear that HTML-Kit is continuing to use space characters after making the above change. However, a closer look will reveal that tabs are being used whenever there's sufficient space. For example, if the size of the indent is five characters and if the tab size is two characters, two tabs and one space character will be used to fill the space.

HTML-Kit Build 290 and 292 will continue to use space characters when using "Edit | Increase Indent (Ctrl+] or Tab)" and "Edit | Decrease Indent (Ctrl+[ or Shift+Tab)" main menu options. A built-in option for using tab characters when indenting the selected block of text is planned for a future build. TabIndent or hkBlockIndent can be used to block indent using tabs.
